INVISIBLE FRIENDS: CALL FOR PROPOSALS
PORTFOLIO THEME:
I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us! —don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
-Emily Dickinson
In the oppressively digital state of contemporary culture where influencers rule and truth is subjective at best, what is unseen seems to have an ever diminishing value. To be seen is to have worth, and by extension–power. Invisibility is framed as a loss: of relevance, of desirability, of voice. For those on the fringes—this disappearance is not chosen, but imposed by cultural narratives. Contrary to the societal values that equate visibility with relevance and worth, this portfolio invites artists to explore invisibility as both erasure and refuge.
From poltergeist to púca, a pursuit of the unseen unlocks imaginative power. And from Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway” to Ellison’s “Invisible Man” an embrace of the invisible self offers a release from surveillance, permission to exist without performance, and space for reinvention beyond imposed identities. A departure from visibility replaces expectations with possibilities. Participating artists are invited to create images exploring or celebrating the unseen, and may choose to create under a pen name, to experiment with the freedom offered by anonymity. Prints are scheduled for exhibition in Cain Gallery of Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas in 2027, with further traveling exhibition opportunities pending.
